What is Proof of Work?

Proof of Work (PoW) is a consensus mechanism used in blockchain networks like Bitcoin. Miners compete to find a special number (nonce) that, when combined with block data and hashed, produces a hash with as many leading zeros as possible.

In this simulator:

  • Start mining to generate SHA-256 hashes
  • Try to find hashes with the most leading zeros
  • Compare your mining performance with other miners
  • The more zeros, the rarer and more valuable the hash!

In the bitcoin network, miners race to solve complex cryptographic puzzles using computational power. The first miner to find a valid solution gets to add the next block and receive cryptocurrency rewards. The process requires significant computing resources, as miners must test many different values (nonces) to find a hash that meets the target criteria.
